Nasty weather like sunshine for Pennridge

HORSHAM - The dreary conditions at Hatter Stadium Friday night were made for no-frills football.

That suited Pennridge just fine.

The Rams snapped a three-game losing streak with a 21-12 win over Hatboro-Horsham, a game in which field position played a huge factor.

Pennridge (3-4, 1-2 SOL Continental) took a two-touchdown lead into the locker room at halftime thanks to a pair of mistakes by its host.

The Hatters (3-4, 2-2) held the ball for 11 plays on the first drive of the game before being forced into punt formation. But the fourth-down snap went over the head of punter Connor Poston and the Rams found themselves at the Hatter 37-yard line for their first offensive snap.

Four plays later Dylan Moore scored on a four-yard sweep off the right side to give the Rams the lead.

"Stuff's going to happen," Hatboro-Horsham coach Dave Sanderson said. "I don't think we responded very well defensively to that."

Pennridge got a boost in field position late in the first quarter when the Hatters went for it on fourth-and-one from their own 45-yard line and failed to make the first down. After a punt exchange, the Rams started what became an eight-play drive from the 42 that ended when Ian Walbridge crashed in from a yard out with five minutes left in the second quarter.

The Rams had prepared for a muddy track. But though the turf was soft, it didn't become a bog.

"The field wasn't as bad as we thought it would be," Pennridge coach Randy Cuthbert said. "We thought we might run the ball 40 times and throw it once."

Cuthbert unveiled a dual-quarterback system Friday night, with senior Dan Wolfe and sophomore Cody Reimel alternating snaps.

"We ran two groups in practice all week," Cuthbert said. "When one (quarterback) ran a play, the other would run it. This gives me a chance to talk to both of them."

The Hatters got on the board late in the third quarter on a nifty catch-and-run by Nick Dovidio, who caught a center screen over the middle from Matt Hollenbeck and bounced outside for a 46-yard touchdown.

With 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the third it was 14-6 and Hatboro-Horsham appeared back in the game - until Ryan Metzler silenced the Hatter faithful when he took the ensuing kickoff 83 yards up the middle and down the left sideline, all the way to the end zone.

"We had fun this week," Metzler said. "One of the coaches asked us this week why we played football with the Pennridge Greenjackets. It was because it was fun. We were out on the field yesterday (in bad weather) for a two-hour practice like we always do."

The Hatters put a consolation touchdown on the board with when Hollenbeck and Poston connected on a 1-yard scoring pass.
